If You’re Injured

Maybe you are injured as the result of an accident or repetitive stress injury (RSI), or have a condition affecting your hands, arms, neck, or back. If you need to rest your upper body in order to heal, voice recognition software is your partner.

You can remain productive in your work while you are healing.

You can get up and running very quickly with voice recognition software. After one training session, you will be able to dictate text.

It may be especially important for you to evaluate your approach to the computer, if you think that your use of the computer may have contributed to or even caused your injury, repetitive stress injury (RSI), or condition. Your work on the computer, including the use of the keyboard and the mouse, and your position at your workstation, could be at the center of the problem. You may wish to ask your physician or physical therapist for an opinion about this.

This does not mean you need to stay away from the computer. You can have a full and productive work life, and a chance to make a complete recovery, by adopting a different approach at the computer.

Consider whether your condition is most affected by typing, by using the mouse, or both (and discuss with your medical team if necessary). This will help to plan how you will use voice recognition software. Some people supplement their use of voice recognition software with other “assistive technology” devices. These can be part of your plan for healing.

Examples of injuries, repetitive stress injuries (RSIs), and conditions affecting the hands and arms include: cubital tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, nerve spasms, tendinitis, and thoracic outlet syndrome.
